The Mekong river valley
and Khorat Plateau areas which today encompass part of Laos,
Cambodia and Thailand were inhabited at least 10,000 year
ago. One third of Laos’s total population lives in cities
in Mekong river valley, chiefly Vientiane, Luang Prabang,
Savannakhet and Pakse. Another third lives along other major
rivers such as Nam Ou, the Nam Seuang and Set Don. |
| Vientiane set on a bend in the Mekong river,
Vientiane was originally one of the early Lao valley meuang
(city-states) that were consolidated around AD1000. |
Pha That Luang
(Great Stupa) is the most national monument in Laos which
is a symbol of both the Buddhist religion and Lao sovereignty. |
Haw Pha Kaew
was originally built in 1656 by command of King Settjatjorat,
who on inheriting the Lan Xang throne moved the capital from
Luang Prabang to Vientiane and brought with him the so-called
Emerald Buddha(Pha Kaew in Lao, which means Jewel Buddha image)
Today it a museum of religious art.
Wat Si Muang a temple which is considered the home of the
guardian spirit of Vientiane. |
Luang Prabang
encircled by mountains and set 700 m above sea level at the
confluence of the Khan river (nam Khan) and the Mekong river,
the city’s mix of gleaming temple roofs, crumbling French
Provincial architecture and multiethnic in habitants tends
to enthrall even the most jaded travelers.
Wat
Xient Thong King Setthathirat ordered the construction
of this magnificent temple in 1560 and the compound remained
under the royal patronage until 1975. It is placed within
the easy reach of the Mekong. It shows the typical Lao art
style with old religious artifacts and some ancient masterpieces
of Lao art. |
